A job interview is like a first date. You will be received by a recruiter (a person from the human resources department). Sometimes, your future manager is also present at the interview or at least someone “from the field”.
It is obvious that your skills and your ability to put them forward will be the most important during the interview. However, do not neglect your appearance. This will have an influence on how your interlocutors will perceive you. But more importantly, they will affect you and your approach to maintenance!
Dress for an interview: 10 basic rules
- Before a meeting, we should learn about the company that calls us. A visit to his website can help us to better target the culture of the box and adapt our look accordingly.
- You have to present a self-image that is both professional and personal. We choose a less casual version than we would put to work in the context of targeted work.
- We avoid anything that can divert the attention of our interlocutors from what we have to say: miniskirt, plunging neckline, explosive bracelets, fishnet stockings, necklace and tinsel earrings, screaming lipstick, wick in the face, etc.
- Special attention is paid to the cleanliness of our clothes.
- If you sweat easily, especially under stress, you avoid 100% synthetic materials that make you look sweaty and do not breathe. They are preferred fabrics of natural fibers, such as cotton or woolen, or mixtures of natural and synthetic fibers.
- Wear a jacket or not? If it is not inevitable, it remains a symbol of professionalism, the more one aims for a high position in the hierarchy, the more it becomes unavoidable.
- For makeup, avoid glossy eyeliner or matte vermilion lipstick. The motto is “natural”. So we go soft and we choose neutral colors. Same thing with the hair that we want without complicated setting and without wicks in the face. As for nails, they must be well maintained and not too long; if we opt for a varnish, we choose it discreet.
- We avoid the perfume, which can be disturbing if the interlocutor does not share our olfactory preferences. If you want to wear it, we turn to a light eau de toilette.
- Do not forget the shoes! An impeccable outfit married to neglected shoes can say a lot about our lack of attention to detail. So we leave at home sports shoes, heels too high and sandals type tong! For the height, heels of one to two inches are preferred.
- Finally, in doubt, it is better to do less. “We forget the” too “: to makeup, overdressed, too low-cut, too” mate “, too short, too sexy, too bright.
Other healthy pieces of adviceĀ
- Bet on simplicity
Wearing too showy or too extravagant may distract your interlocutor rather than convince him. Avoid too bright colors, plunging necklines, overprinted prints and especially, skirts or dresses too short (more than 3 inches above the knee).
