Despite the horror stories that make the headlines, one should bear in mind that you are usually at no more risk while travelling than you are at home. But we can feel more vulnerable when we travel, and sometimes put ourselves in dodgy situations through lack of local knowledge. So, here are a few common-sense rules that I set myself when travelling solo – and they should help to keep you safe on your own adventures, too.
1. Pre-Arrange Your First Night’s Accommodation
This should be done at the very least. Where possible, try to pre-arrange your airport transfer too – especially if arriving at night. This will minimize the risk of any tragedy that could turn out a nightmare for you. There are various travel agencies who are top-notch in curating the perfect holidays either at your local destination or at the destination of your choice.
2.Don’t Hire A Taxi Off The Street
This applies especially at night. Make the most of reliable local sources such as hotels and restaurants that are able to book legitimate and trustworthy public transport. If you’re not a local, then do not ever book transportation. We are not saying to trust anyone, all we want to say is that your safety is in your hands and you surely don’t want to lose yourself in any trouble.
3. Dress Appropriately
This is a major highlight of your trip if you’re making your way to the Asian countries. Unfortunately, in some societies, how you dress can make you a target. So, err on the side of caution and dress conservatively, whether that involves covering your legs, shoulders, arms or head.
4. Save Bag Space For All Your Holiday Purchases
You are a female traveller and you would absolutely be going to shop till you drop at the destination which you have chosen to travel. Whether it’s duty-free goods or holiday mementoes, it’s inevitable that you’ll be bringing more back home with you than when you left – so make sure you have room for it!
5. Don’t Put Your Personal Belongings Inside The Packing Bag
You’re travelling alone and you might not be aware of the rules and regulations of the country in which you’re going to embark. Put all your personal essentials in one place, i.e – keep your personal kinds of stuff such as wallet, passport, tickets, hotel keys, visa immigration with you, not at your accommodation room. REMEMBER, not to open yourselves at your own country. Every destination is different in terms of its security, livelihood.
6. Arrive During A Day
Now, one of the most important thing you can’t neglect. Although, the travelling time might not be in your hands still, try to travel in the afternoon time. This will allow you to see more places and the risk of transportation in the new country would automatically be reduced.
7. Choose Your Accommodation Wisely
You are embarking on a new destination and it’s obvious you want to cover the major attractions as much as possible. For that, you’ve to choose your accommodation wisely. Means, you need to make your accommodation in the area which is at equal distance of all the major tourist attractions. And most important, always skip the accommodation near the railway station or airport, because these 2 places are fully occupied by the other tourist. You may get the ideal offer of accommodation just when you checkout from the airport or train, but chances are you’re likely to become fool with their money-making tactics. So, choose your accommodations wisely. Never pay for more than what you’re looking for. As simple as that.
